December 2010: T’was the Night before Sweepstakes T’was the night before Sweepstakes, and all through the house, Not a keyboard was stirring, not even a mouse; Antennas were hung on the chimney with care. In hopes that all Sections soon would be there;   The ops were nestled, all snug in their beds, While echoes of VY1 danced in their heads; Mama, in a huff, had left in a cab, So I settled down for a bit of a nap.   When down in the shack there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter; Away to the basement I flew in a horror, Tore open the pad lock and opened the door;   The glow of the filaments, above and below, Was proof 'nough to me: Someone was QRO; When what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a clandestine op on my personal gear;   He was a wrinkly ol' chap, with a sheepish-like grin, And I knew in a moment, it had to be Slim; More rapid than McElroy his dits and dahs came, And he logged each fake QSO, without any shame;   Now JA, now EU, now NA, now Asia, Now VK, now ZS, now Stateside, now all o’ ya; It filled the whole band, that QRM wall, How can he possibly pick out those calls?   So I laughed at myself, to have thought I was good, Ol' Slim was the best, I now understood; So I tipped my cap and bid him good night, And said "Make sure you're gone by morning's first light";   I went back to bed and drifted away, While Slim, on the radio, played and played; I woke the next morning, "What a dream that was !!!", Wait’ll I tell the guys, they'll all be abuzz;   Then six months later, comes a radiogram, "You have ten-thousand cards at the bureau, my man!”
