The Prez’s Shack

Where did the DX go?  Almost all of the contacts that I make lately are domestic and I don’t even hear Europe much anymore.  Now that we are back into the contest season, maybe some DX will show up. How about that Sun?  I don’t know what it has been eating lately, but it must have had some pretty bad indigestion over the last month.  One big x-ray blast wiped out HF propagation and a few other solar burps made HF propagation dicey over several days.  Bad timing, too, with normal communication links to the Caribbean destroyed by the recent hurricanes.  HF was shut down at the worst possible time. And the hurricanes… what a mess down there.  I can’t imagine how Dominica, Puerto Rico and other countries in that region are going to come back from the destruction that they saw.  Hopefully, they can. The year is winding down and we have just two regular meetings left in 2017.  Please join us on Wednesday, October 18, at 7:30 p.m. at the Delaware Red Cross, 380 Hills-Miller Rd.  Hopefully, the weather will still be nice and you can gather outside for some eyeball QSOs in the fresh air.  Watch the email list for where the dinner crew will meet up.  Visitors and guests are always welcome. See you there! 73, Joe, AA8TA

DELARA retains Special Service

Thanks to President Joe, AA8TA, DELARA has again qualified as an ARRL “Special Service Club”…a recognition we have held for years. The status is not a once-and-done thing. Every two years, the club meeds to resubmit its activities, goals, and programs for review. The ARRL explains the concept on its website: A club that exists to go above and beyond for their communities and for Amateur Radio is what defines a Special Service Club (SSC).  They are the leaders in their Amateur Radio communities who provide active training classes, publicity programs and actively pursue technical projects and operating activities. The club has to show activity in the following areas: New ham development and training Public relations Emergency Communications Technical Advancement Operating Activities Miscellaneous activities (See some club information in this month’s article by Tom Sly, WB8LDC for more numbers -ed) Nationally (including Canada, PR and Virgin Islands) there are only 146 such clubs. We have 45 here in Ohio- a great showing!  While thanks go out to El Prez, we thank ~all~ club members, for your enthusiastic support and great participation in our club activities!  We can have all the cool programs but if our members sit at home, we have nothing. You all make this a very special club!
