If you’ve been around DELARA for longer than three days, you already know that Field Day, the national emergency radio weekend, is our largest event! In addition to operating radios to test our ability to connect with the rest of the nation, DELARA members have this event as a great time to renew friendships and just fellowship over some really good food! For our operating plans, see the Field Day page. Our June meeting traditionally deals with Field Day-- but don’t think you’re allowed to play hooky if this isn’t your thing! We have some fun planned so mark the third Wednesday and be there!!

The Prez’s Shack
I guess it is safe to throw away my Hamvention ticket stub; they have not contacted me about winning one of the big prizes. Maybe I should contact them to make sure they have my contact info correct for sending the loot to me. Oh well.It was fun to meet some people in person that I only hear by dits and dahs. The weather was not so great; I was there on Friday and it rained a few times during the day. There is a lot of room in the buildings, but if it rains, there are not very many places to sit inside and the places to sit outside are pretty wet after a shower. The flea market was walkable. I didn’t have too much trouble out there but I would not have wanted to be there when it was raining. So much for Dayton/Xenia. Time for June’s big activity: Field Day. Some amateur radio clubs exist just to do Field Day; we are not quite that obsessive, but it is a big deal. Many hams love this time. There is the social aspect, the camaraderie of several people setting up stations and antennas, the contesting excitement (even though Field Day is not a contest), the food, the chance to get non-hams and relatively new hams on the air, proving that we can actually get an amateur radio station on the air from a field, parking lot or some other portable location and, probably many other reasons. We hope that you are looking forward to DELARA’s Field Day. It will be at the Delaware Red Cross, 380 Hills-Miller Road. It starts Saturday, June 23, at 2:00 p.m. and runs through Sunday, June 24, at 2:00 p.m. We plan to operate the whole 24 hours. We are planning two SSB and two CW stations. We will also have a Get-On-The-Air (GOTA) station, a VHF (6-meter) station and a satellite station. Saturday is also our picnic at around 5:00 p.m.There will be lots to see and lots to do. This is family-friendly and is open to experienced hams, fairly new hams, non-hams, young, retired and in between. Please come on out for the picnic, at a minimum, and longer if you can.We will also need some help on Friday, June 22 (weather permitting), to set everything up.If that is not enough, our next meeting is Wednesday, June 20, at 7:30 p.m. at the Delaware Red Cross, 380 Hills-Miller Road. DELARA’s activities are open to all so do not hesitate to visit us.73, Joe, AA8TA
