The Prez’s Shack

What to write about this month? We are still in a bit of a hangover from Field Day and it is also a bit less appealing to be outside when the temperature is around 90 degrees. Not to worry about that; it will not be long before we are complaining about how cold it is. And on it goes. Speaking of getting outside – something that has caught my attention is the popularity of combining being outside and ham radio. Maybe it has been that way for a long time but in the last several years, Elecraft has introduced small transceivers that can be carried in a pocket and many other small, low-power radios are available. Many are in kit form, some with surface- mount components already soldered onto a PC board with varying amounts of through-hole parts to be soldered in place. Everybody should experience the wonderful delight of winding a toroid inductor or transformer. Many of the people who venture out are in the age range that might be considered as young professionals. That could mean people in the 30 to 45 years-old age group. Certainly a wider range of age than that, but this age range does find a lot of fun with being outdoors and playing around with a small transceiver. Today, it is easier than ever to get on the air from a picnic table. We have several members of our club who do these types of things. Perhaps you have seen some of their writings or have talked to them about their experiences. It is not just the high- school or younger crowd we can target for new hams – the group that has kids old enough to be somewhat independent is also a good demographic. They are young enough to be around for a long time. Something to consider. Something else to consider is our next meeting so don’t just consider it, come on out. When? Wednesday, August 21, 7:30 p.m. Where? Delaware Red Cross, 380 Hills-Miller Rd. What? Yours truly will discuss the CW Academy. 73, Joe, AA8TA

Completed

Most of you are familiar with the Ironman which just completed at the end of July. It is one of the top ten Ironman competitions according to Ironman staff. This year, there were 2,600 slots opened, and nearly all were filled. On race day, approximately 2,100 were present to begin the swim. The winner completed the extensive course in four hours, one minute and some change. Eric Engel from Madison Wisconsin won, he was in the male age 30-34 category. As most of you also know, his win was overshadowed by the fatal accident on Rt. 23 just north of the Delaware Park entrance, where 44 year old Kristen Oswald of Royersford, PA died after swerving into a lane of motor vehicle traffic. Ironman staff, and all amateur radio operators reacted professionally and assisted in locating the victim’s husband (also a competitor). Kudo’s to Delaware and Marion ARES members.
