The Arnold

You might be interested in volunteering at the world's largest multisport athletic event? Yes, this is long but please read it :-) then send it to your doc/nurse/PA/EMT/Med student/Ham friends! This year's Arnold Fitness Weekend is Thursday, Feb. 28, Friday March 1st, Saturday March 2nd, Sunday March 3rd, 2019. Our medical team site is http://arnoldexpo.com/medical The Arnold Sports Festival Weekend main website: arnoldsportsfestival.com ABOUT THE MEDICAL TEAM: We are once again re-organizing the medical team for the Arnold Sports Festival Weekend, the world's largest multisport sports contest held here in Columbus, Ohio. We need your volunteer help at the event and in recruiting. We will require close to 600 volunteers this year. PLEASE HELP! We utilize ONLY attending and resident physicians, nurses, PAs, EMS personnel, med students, HAM operators and Boy Scouts. We are not recruiting new folks outside of the above licensing. Our team assists injured athletes and has saved lives and prevented serious injuries from becoming disabling or lethal. This year we will run about 40 medical teams from two command centers. We are a dynamic team with 20 years of experience. Our basic function is to provide first aid. Anything significant is triaged to our onsite EMS for transport. We have also been tasked with initiating emergent care for spectators. Of course, the bodybuilding and weightlifting portion (The Arnold Classic), the original attraction, is now VASTLY overshadowed by the number of athletes in other events such as Karate, CrossFit, gymnastics, cheerleading, grappling, fencing, etc. (The Arnold Expo). These two together constitute the Arnold Sports Festival Weekend and it has grown to such an extent that we are now more than twice the size of the Olympics with approximately 22,000 athletes from 84 countries this year at a dozen sites around Columbus (two major sites, each with over a dozen venues and command centers). We will have more than 75 different events (15 Olympic). For the majority of events we use the fairgrounds (OEC-Ohio Expo Center) and a collection of sites around and including the Greater Columbus Convention Center (GCCC) – The Hyatt, The Hilton, Battelle Hall. There is a hidden factor also that increases the magnitude of our work - the Olympics handles their 10,500 athletes over a 2 week period but we must handle our 22,000 in 3 days! We expect about 500 injuries with many hospital referrals and a dozen+ EMS transports. This is a remarkable opportunity for all to learn about the planning and execution of mass gathering events and the simultaneous handling of a large number of injured individuals. Therefore, it is easy to see that this is an excellent place to acquire solid experience in handling a mass casualty incident (MCI). That it is so very calm and controlled is a credit to the organization and volunteers of the medical team. A look at the total number of injuries and the communications, preparation and organization that it takes to achieve this smooth performance is a fabulous education in mass casualty/disaster preparedness/MCI command. Feel free to send this email to medical personnel that may be interested in our team. Remember, we are looking for attendings/residents/nurses, PAs, EMTs, med students and Ham operators ONLY. You may sign up on the website arnoldexpo.com/medical on the top right or use this signup link: https://goo.gl/forms/bfIA7rsWXagCRlon1 You may have difficulty trying to sign up from behind a corporate firewall or cell phone. WHEN YOU SIGN UP, WRITE DOWN THE DATES AND TIMES FOR WHICH YOU ARE VOLUNTEERING FOR YOUR OWN RECORD! Due to logistical issues we cannot accept less than 6 hours of volunteer time and most folks just go the whole day (16 hours). Send any questions to Dr. Griffin's email: arnmed06@aol.com In terms of liability, all of us are covered under both the Good Samaritan Act and The Arnold’s event insurance. We have our own web page system where I have placed ALL the information you will need to acquaint yourself with our rules and recommendations. I need all the prospective volunteers to COMPLETELY review those web pages prior to the March event. http://arnoldexpo.com/medical This event is exciting, fun and a worthwhile public service and I need your assistance. This is where mass casualty incident/triage experience can be obtained with all the backup you may require INSTANTLY available. Please ID yourself in each email since it is difficult to remember just exactly who canyouguess@somewhere.com might be... Having to peruse my cross-referenced spreadsheet of 700 folks to find a name can be a real chore. Phone numbers and email addresses should be personal, not corporate/hospital/med school since folks move around and email accounts get deleted when you move, mostly. *Please include your name with any reply so I can tell who someone@nowhere.com might be.
