The Prez’s Shack

Three guesses what the topic this month is – time is up. It is about propagation in inhomogeneous plasma fields. Oops, sorry, that is for another time. It is Field Day! What else? What is not to like about Field Day at the Delaware Red Cross? Air conditioning, lots of room to hang out and eat, shelter in case a little rain decides to fall, plenty of parking, easy to get to. This year, we checked off a few items on our punch list with the big ones being a visit by an elected official and getting three satellite QSOs. Who says the mayor of Delaware does not read Facebook? That is how she ended up spending a little time with us nuts. We had an awesome antenna setup for contacting satellites and it worked great. Yours truly is awful at taking pictures so if Dave is back for a repeat performance next year, you will have to come out and see it. It is impressive. Many groups are jumping into the digital QSO waters for Field Day and we also made a serious effort at that. Next year, most groups and people will probably be using FT4 and the other digital modes may be relegated to the sidelines. It will be interesting to see how the distribution of QSOs by modes works out. Sure sounds like a lot of success, does it not? Well, there is this invisible guy named Murphy who loves to drop in. Despite the advantages of the Red Cross, we have fought a tough battle with inter-station interference and noise and this year was, disappointedly, no exception. We still have some work to do. This despite tests a little over a month prior that showed a few issues but it was thought that we could live with things. One of the best explanations I heard was a comment on our Monday evening net when a person mentioned that Murphy was driving by and saw our Field Day signs by the road and pulled on in. So, I guess we can blame the signs. Much discussion and analysis will occur as our group is not so easily defeated. It is July and we invite you to circle on your calendars (all of them) our next meeting: Wednesday, July 18, 7:30 p.m. at the Delaware Red Cross, 380 Hills-Miller Rd. See you there! 73, Joe, AA8TA

Next up?

The Ironman 70.3 is a premier athletic event in Delaware County! This year (the fourth for this event) the athletic roster has been expanded. There are now 2600 slots for competitors! Imaging with the assisting team each brings that boosts the Delaware population by well over 10,000! Amateur radio has been in the middle of Ironman since its inception…we monitor the start of the swim (at oh-dark-hundred) on the beach at Delaware State Park, and then Marion County’s ARES group picks up a 56 mile bicycle ride that stretches far into Marion and Morrow counties, returning at Selby Stadium in Delaware. But that, as they say, is not all! Quickly changing into running shoes competitors then run a half marathon in southern Delaware. Hams watch the bike route. More of us watch the changeover point, and monitor the water stops throughout the marathon. We’re at the finish, we’re at the med tents. It’s a great showing for amateur radio - and you’re invited! We can always use more. Log on to “ARES Connect” and register. There’s also an Ironman registration online. We appreciate the professional execution of Delaware’s responders, Marion’s responders, the Ironman staff and of course our ham radio operators!
