ARES – It’s working in Delaware County!
Sometimes it’s helpful to step back and take a look at the broader picture. It helps us all to
realize the overall performance of our organization, and to recognize the time our members
devote to the community!
According to information in ARES Connect (which I diligently keep up to date!), we have a roster
of about 29 people. From January 1 this year, our group alone has contributed 750 hours of
service! That includes monthly nets, monthly training, and events. Don’t fret about the first two
freeloaders, we accumulate numbers from all over the state in our positions. Here are the
numbers so far:

It doesn’t matter how many hours you have- even just one. You deserve our thanks, and we
salute your participation!
Speaking of events, one of the biggest of the year is coming at the end of this month- the
Ironman 70.3! We have a group signed up but we certainly can use more! We work this event in
cooperation with Marion County ARES- they shoulder the duty of managing the very long bicycle
course which runs from Delaware Park up through Marion and Morrow counties. We pick the
riders back up when they cross in to Delaware County and ride to downtown Delaware (Selby
Stadium). There, they quickly put on their running shows and do a half-marathon! We cover the
water stops and other key parts of that run. This is a BIG deal- the competition has been
enlarged to 2600 athletes. So sign up on ARES Connect and go to the volunteer registration site
for Ironman: http://www.ironman.com/triathlon/events/americas/ironman-
70.3/ohio/volunteer.aspx#axzz5tljWnOEy
In the meantime, it’s important to keep our skills sharp. We’ve worked on event management,
missing persons, damage assessment, and we have more training lined up! All are welcome!
Thanks for everything you do!!
July 20 - 21: Miami Valley Steam Thresher Show Plain City
Again a tradition for several DELARA members- we assist Union County with operating a special
event station.
July 28: The big one! Ironman 70.3 Triathlon is back!
This is an “all-hands” event with swim at Delaware State Park, bicycling up through Marion
County and back downtown, then a run in the southern Delaware suburbs.
August 5-6: “Vigilant Guard” Exercise
Not sure if this will involved Delaware, it’s a big military-sponsored exercise shared through Ohio

Amateur Radio is more than
a hobby- it becomes an
important service when
other forms of
communication fail. It’s up
to all of us to stay ready,
stay trained, and stay
available. We could be
required on a moment’s
notice.
Delaware County ARES is part of the
national ARRL program. We rely on
our volunteers. We operate during
several large public events including
the national-level Ironman
competition.
We hold a radio net on the 145.19
repeater (no tone) on the first
Thursday of every month at 8PM.
We hold a training meeting on the
second Thursday of every month at
7:30 usually at the Red Cross building.
All amateurs are invited!

Coordinator, or Joe, K8MP or Craig,

Ohio SEC Report
Lots of activity!
This month, the SEC report is all about YOU! We are in the middle of “Activity Season” for ARES, and we’re going strong across
the state! In fact, we’ve been going strong according to ARES Connect reports from the beginning of the year. Ohio is the first
ARRL Section to completely switch to Connect for our monthly numbers. We are still recording your monthly narratives on the
ARRL-Ohio website…please continue to file those reports! The monthly compilations of those comments are most valuable,
and can be the seed that generates new ideas for your local activity. Here’s how we looked in June:
ARES Connect Monthly Report – June 2019
Number of persons registered per District
Number of hours volunteered per District in June
Breakdown by Event Classification
Top 10 persons for hours volunteered in June
Top 10 persons for events volunteered in June
Note: As an incentive to get folks using the system more, the Ohio Section Manager gave away a 2019 softcover Handbook to
the person acquiring the most hours in the month of June. The winner was Todd Johnson, KD8UND. This is the second of such
incentives that has been done since March of this year.
Pay particular attention to the monthly hours total: 14,000 and counting for the month!! I can’t applaud your work, energy, and
dedication more loudly. We have had great reports from Toledo (the Toledo Air Show) and several other large venues. Thank
you so much for what you have done, and what you will no doubt continue to do throughout the summer.
