NEW THIS MONTH…Amateur Radio News via

audio, video and the written word!!

Hi everyone…a little different, hopefully new and improved PIC column this month. First, the new PIC PODCAST! A different way to hear stories about Amateur Radio. Second, a great video about an antenna farm…and I do mean farm…that will make you want to grow your own. And last…the “normal” written stories about our section and the ongoing events of interest. PIC PODCAST A new monthly feature that will let us bring you the stories of ham radio operators in the own words. Just click on the Podcast ICON for the very first edition! for Podcast DRONE VIEW One of the benefits working for AT&T…other than still working for AT&T…is that I’m a member of a group of hundreds of hams scattered around the country and around the world. Below is link to a great video about an antenna farm in Pennsylvania…enjoy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzzXM5j_CMQ&feature=youtu.be NEWSLETTER CONTEST It’s hard to believe but the 2019 Ohio Section Newsletter Contest has reached the half way mark! Just three months…June 30th…to enter your clubs’ newsletters. I have a ton already and they are logged in, printed and the links to the online newsletters saved so the judges can read and see the quality of the hard work our editors and writers put into every story. Remember, you’ll need two newsletters, from different months, to be entered. The winners will be announced at the Voice of Aladdin Hamfest in early August in Columbus. THE GREAT PRINT VS DIGITAL DEBATE In the backrooms of just about every printed newspaper there are discussions…and decisions…about the future of “ink” and the future of online/digital news. You probably have noticed your hometown newspaper getting a little smaller. In fact many newspapers have literally “stopped the presses” and are only offering the news online. It’s cheaper, leaner and faster…. but maybe not as much of impact as paper. But what you may not have noticed is the increase in the number and size of the ads in the printed newspapers. Advertisers are finding out that now that online ads are not as effective as newspaper ads. On line there is too much congestion…too many ads to choose from. And the viewer only chooses one or two to look at…or makes no choice at all! In the paper, however, well placed…and large ads…near an important story usually mean more looks and more action from the ads. Dissect your local paper, or any paper, and notice the one-page ads near the front. The half page ads near, and in some cases, sandwiched between the obits and the sports. You will also see ads below and above the fold. Years ago…that would be unacceptable and only real news would go there. Speaking of real news, you’ll probably see a reduction of the news stories both in number and in length. Hence the problem now facing newspapers. They are making money on advertising but on longer have the circulation to sustain printing and to expand their delivery area.
