It’s a Pre-Thanksgiving Dinner!
Our beloved chef Tim (K8TAT) is once again putting together a
great way to observe the season with our DELARA family!
Tim will provide smoked turkey, plates utensils and water, and
we bring the rest! Our goal is to start the dinner around 5:30, so
put together that favorite family recipe for seared and roasted
pig knuckles that your grandma always used to make, and come
aboard for our “Boatanchor Night” festivities!
Tim says we can reverse the “who brings what” list from Field
Day- so if you were supposed to bring a desert then, bring a side
dish no w, and so on. No, I don’t remember… and though I
pawed through several newsletter editions, I couldn’t find the
list… bottom line, just bring something, I’m sure it’ll be great!
5:30 PM Prior to the meeting!!
Go Fund Me established
I put up a go fund me page for the Delaware DMR repeater to
help with the ongoing costs we have been experiencing with it.
We are on the 2nd repeater at that location. The first one had a
power surge or lightning take it out we suspect. We hardened the
installation site when we put in the 2nd repeater to better
protect it against lightening and power surges.
The replacement repeater we got was a used one and the finals
went out in it a few months after getting it on the air. We took
that to a Motorola solutions provider in Columbus, Electrocomm,
and they swapped out the receive radio with the transmit radio,
and worked their magic to program the radio serial numbers
back into the repeater so it would turn on and work. The radio
shop said the model repeater we have Motorola doesn't make
parts for any more and recommended replacing it sooner than
later with one that they still make parts for. It looks like when the
current repeater fails it will likely have to be replaced.
We thought a go fund me page would be way to generate some
revenue to put towards the long term goal of replacing the
repeater especially since the repeater isn't sponsored by a club
and there are only three of us that are involved with maintaining
it. We are working towards having funds in place before the
repeater fails to be able to replace it in order to minimize the
down time.
Feel free to share this with anyone who may like to contribute
towards our effort of putting up and maintaining a DMR repeater
in Delaware.

Union County looking to launch scouting
search/rescue teams
I met with Matt McConnell Camp Master at Otter Run, Jensen Hykes from
Simon Kenton Council, and Cat Hufnagle EMA volunteer who is on the ski
patrol at Mad River mountain about forming a boy scout venture crew in
Marysville with a focus on search and rescue related activities.
Matt along with troop 355 organized a fall camporee at Camp Otter Run where
the scouts earned the Search and Rescue merit badge. He was able to get a
Ohio search and rescue team with a dog there to work with the scouts.
Discussion with the scouts afterwards led to the idea of starting a search and
Rescue venture crew.
Matt envisions organizing the crew to follow the ICS structure as much as
possible. This will help the scouts learn the ICS system and where different
interests that make up a Search and Rescue team fit in to the ICS system. This
will be helpful if the scouts decide to pursue a career or volunteer in a SAR
team, Fire dept, EMA, Red Cross, law enforcement, etc...
A SAR team has many different interests from boots on the ground searching,
logistics for resources, communications, search dogs, drones, etc that would
be of interest to many young people.
Meetings will likely be monthly. We are still putting feelers out to get adult
leaders involved and also for an organization to charter the venture crew. We
will also be working on getting young people ages 14 to 20 that have an
interest in it to signup for the crew from Marysville and neighboring
communities/counties.
If you know anyone that would be a good fit for the venture crew or that
would be a good resource to help with training activities or adult leadership
positions can you let me know? If you have any suggestions for a charter
organization in Union County please let me know. We are currently looking
into some of the fire departments as a charter organization.
A minimum of 5 adult leaders for committee chair, secretary, treasurer, and
crew leaders are needed. A minimum of 5 scouts, 3 have to be new to
scouting or not active in scouting are needed to start a crew. We hope to
exceed these numbers.
We will be having future meetings as we get our ducks in a row to form a new
venture crew. I would like to keep everyone that is interested in it informed
about our meetings, progress and when scouts can join.
Please let me know your thoughts on this and any suggestions you have for
us.
