Welcome

This is the official newsletter of a great ham radio club! Our DELARA family appreciates what you’re doing with the hobby! Why not take a few minutes and write out what interests you in our hobby! We have room for your article always! Send it to Stan [at] standi.com by the end of the month.

The Prez’s Shack

It is pretty amazing how far our radios have come in the last several decades. Those who have been around for a while remember that “portable” transceivers might stretch the definition of portable. They could also take a fair amount of space. I have seen some ads from years ago for radios that could fit in cars. Good thing cars back then were roomy because about the only room I would have for such radios would be in the trunk. Given how small and light radios are today it is no wonder that many people pack them up and head out to a park or some other location to work some other hams. These are not toy radios either. Some are quite capable and could do a decent job in a ham shack yet can be put in a backpack and are fairly light. It is sad that some hams cannot get on the air because of the restrictions that they have to deal with wherever they live. But if they are physically able to, there are many options available to go outside, weather permitting, and make some contacts. Along the way, they learn quite a bit about antennas and how to quickly deploy them, pack them up and deploy them again later. Several people in our club do this on a weekly basis and that is great. We have a lot of experts in our club and these portable operating fans are experts in their own rights. Perhaps you could join them sometime and get infected with the portable operating bug yourself. Above all, you’ll see how much fun they have even if things do not always work out as intended. Hopefully, everybody can laugh about the various misfortunes, as long as nobody gets hurt. And now, time for our usual plea – you know how it goes. Please join us for our next meeting. You will find it on Wednesday, September 18, 7:30 p.m. at the Delaware Red Cross, 380 Hills- Miller Rd in Delaware. Look up one of our portable operating experts and ask them about what they do. See you there! 73, Joe, AA8TA

Back in the Day

Without doubt, the most significant annual event for DELARA is Field Day. The club has posted some top scores, it has chalked up some really interesting war stories, and most of all has promoted a great time of fellowship with our ‘radio family’, For our September meeting, Ken W8SMK has compiled a great collection of photos reflecting our Field Day heritage. It’s going to be fun, and it’s an opportunity to see ourselves in a much younger condition.
