The Prez’s Shack

We have a lot going on!

You know, some times it’s a good thing to sit back and consider all the good in our lives. Especially with the goofiness in our country, it’s easy to lose sight of our own blessings and good position in life. Take, as an example, the many things we have going for us in the Delaware Amateur Radio Association. First, we are a part of a really great hobby… OK it’s more than a hobby to us, it’s actually a lifestyle. Communication, the technical aspect of radio and RF, new technologies, even competition and operating events are all worthwhile aspects of this pursuit to which we can dedicate some of our time. One of the aspects of this hobby which makes it so worthwhile is that it is a service to our neighbors, our community. Because we provide service through ARES or through helping with community projects such as the All-Horse Parade (well, OK, not ~THIS~ year, sigh) we are able to show our love for this county and its people and give back to help our area. Second, the Delaware Amateur Radio Association is a traditional gathering of hams, with great people, great avenues to learn and ‘do’, and great resources. I look forward to each meeting! One of the high points is seeing other members of the club. There are so many members who have rich backgrounds- from jet pilot to NASA, to CIA, to public service, to university professor and even ‘Big Ear’ SETI expertise so many of our members are technical achievers. But the better thing is that those members who are just getting immersed into our hobby find the door just as open, the people willing to share rather than brag so that they, too, can learn and grow in the radio sport! In short, you all just blow me away!! When I first moved to ‘this side’ of Delaware County, I was intrigued by the Monday Night Net. First impression was, gee this is kinda slow-ish. But it didn’t take long to realize that the laid- back, friendly atmosphere did something very important- it allowed each of us the chance to ‘check in’ with our friends, make sure things were going OK, and kind of bolster each other as we go through life together. What a magical thing! Then, there was Covid. The goal of separating all of us was easily achieved- yet, our hobby came through again! Thanks to Mike, W8MDC’s yeoman efforts, our gatherings became nightly- a place where we could each connect, and stay in touch! This is no small accomplishment, and the time commitment Mike and others have put into the project is remarkable. There’s way more to the net than the bird reports! Another aspect is the willingness of club members to actually support the club. This is where many other organizations fall apart… the 80/20 rule and more. But call for a work day here, you better have a big parking lot because club members are going to show up in droves! Not only club projects, but helping individual members gets the same turnout! All I can say is “Wow!” I’m so proud to be associated with DELARA, I know you are, too! Let’s keep the traditions going, the interest spreading, and the success climbing! -Stan, N8BHL, VP

We continue to

multi-task!

Or is that multi-MASK?? Reflecting the general population in our land, DELARA members are divided on how we regard this COVID thing. Some have just decided to be done with all the shenanigans, while others are firmly convinced of the need to be protected from the virus. The cool thing is, we don’t have to take a side in DELARA! We can have it both ways! Thanks to Ken’s video expertise we are “Zooming” our meetings so you don’t have to take risks to still attend our meetings! You may know he was big into amateur television in the past-i if you’re interested, corner him! So we do very much welcome you to the Red Cross for our monthly gathering- we can even sit at a proper distance if desired. Or, you’re welcome to catch the link in your club email and just click in to watch! It’s the best of both worlds. Either way, we sincerely hope you continue to participate, ‘cause we welcome you!!
