A Field Day for New Hams...

I just check the roster and see that we have 20 new members in our club since Field Day 2021. Many of those are new hams as well. I want to extend a special invitation to all new DELARA members to join us for Field Day 2022 on June 25th and 26th. You don't need to have experience. Actually, it is more fun when you don't. And you don't need a General or Extra license to participate. In fact, you don't need a license at all. One of our operators will be happy to sit with you and help you make some contacts. We even have a special station just to help guests 'Get On The Air' (aptly named, the GOTA station). And don't forget your spouse, children or grandchildren. One thing you will discover is how popular they will be on the air. Most people will go out of their way answer a call from women and children. I think that's because it's so easy to talk with an 'old man' on the radio any day of the week. There really is a lot of encouragement for women and young people to get into the hobby. That encouragement can start with you. So load up the car and come out to the ARC this Field Day and have some fun. Maybe that will lead to a few more new hams down the road. Hope to see you at our club station at the Red Cross the weekend of June 25th and 26th. 73 - Mike W8MDC DELARA President President@K8es.org

DELARA

Serving the public We have had our first real severe weather net now (and at this writing it’s entirely possible to have number 2!) I am biased, because the weather net was what got me interested in a ham radio license… and the interest has held all these years. I would guess the majority of hams have a higher-than-normal interest and experience with weather. So it follows that applying ham radio to the weather all the while significantly providing protection to our area is a pretty cool aspect of our radio sport. In order to make this a dependable service, there is one key ingredient: we all have to be ready to jump in when needed. Some periods it seems like every night sees severe weather. But taken against the entire year, it’s really not that frequent. But when it threatens we owe it to our community to participate! So far we’re doing great, and I sincerely thank you for being a part! Yes, the best net is a ‘quiet’ net but that’s not because no one is out there, it’s because there are many of us and we can watch that there is no threat. When the threat appears, we’ll be there! -Stan N8BHL

Lots of things to do!

DELARA members are bacck in the swing! Over the past couple of months, there have been a number of activities in which many of our members have participated! Over the summer in addition to Field Day (always a big draw) the Boot Camp brought a large number out for a fun day. Ironman fielded 29 ham operators from three counties to help keep that event running. The latest adventures have included a large turnout for the Ohio QSO Party, putting the ARC stations back on the air. And in mid- September came the All Horse Parade, complete with Clydesdales. And of course the nightly radio nets, the digital group, and ARES training are there to keep us interacting. We send big thanks out to all who take their time and effort to have fun and serve our community! DELARA is an active club- and if you’re a newer member to the hobby, these activities are a great way to make some serious friendships! That has always been the best part of DELARA - friendships built around a common interest!
