Howdy from Joe’s Place!

Ambassador Grant took The Delara Embassy on the road for Delaware’s First Friday on June 3rd. Our location was at Sandusky and William streets. We had AC power and even borrowed a table from a nearby establishment. Grant brought a two-meter rig and a mag-mount and I brought a laptop, SignaLink interface, my trusty Baofeng, and a 5/8 wave mag-mount. My plans were to use FLDIGI through the 145.19 repeater and WinLink through Stan’s WinLink node, N8BHL-10, on 145.730. Our “Booth” wasn’t much to look at, but with me, Form always plays second fiddle to Function, and it functioned well. Get a load of that fancy oil drip pan ground plane and the strategic placement of Grant’s tote sack. The sun was making my laptop hot and that tote sack gave it some much needed shade. We had excellent FLDIGI comms via the .19 machine. ERD-Bob and I exchanged several messages and Radiograms. Unfortunately, we didn’t have any visitors that wanted to send a Radiogram. We weren’t as successful with WinLink. I was able to connect to Stan’s node but the connection was spotty, causing a lot of retries and eventually disconnects. Our location was probably the lowest point in downtown Delaware. If we had been a block or two north on Sandusky, I think it would have worked fine. We had many Delara members and friends stop by and chat. My son Josh and grandson Caleb paid us a visit too. I didn’t think about getting photos of everyone until later. DOH!!!! Grant, KD8UNQ, Alex, N8QL, and I were there for the duration. Alex’s wife Christina was there most of the evening, along with their doggie “Stella”. The folks at Creative Foundations made a very nice sign advertising our ability to send Radiograms for the public. One more thing: I found out Ambassador Grant has been paying $40 for each First Friday operation. Perhaps we could tap into the club’s resources to help him out. That’s it for this month. I hope to see you all at the meeting but especially at Field Day. Make sure you get in some FD radio time!
