Club News
Bands are hopping - and so are our members!
Reports are seen almost daily on our DELARA email
reflector of band openings galore! Particularly on 15
meters we’re watching reports of JA’s and other stations
around the globe being logged by our operators.
Not only are the bands hopping again (there were some
of us who wondered if they ~ever~ would!) but our
members are getting out there as well. Literally.
AE8Q Ed, N8QL Alex and myself KE8QPI are planning a POTA
"test run" on May 14th. We scoped out a spot at the Alum
Creek Boat Ramp at 4505 Africa Rd a few weeks ago and
have decided to meet there at 9am Saturday May 14th.
We will be setting up several portable radios including a
YAESU FT-891 and a YAESU FT-991a (and possibly something
else) and we also have 4 or 5 antennas to choose from
including an EFHW (from Dr. Bob's antenna building clinic at
the ARC), Buddipole, Wolf River Coil and several others.
The 3 of us are new to POTA and will use this day for a 4 or 5
hour Park activation to see where we lack and what could
be improved to better make contacts. We will be registered
on the POTA website and expect many contacts.
Again, this is a test run of our equipment and a learning
experience we will gather data with and use it to improve
our skills for the Bigger July 16th/July 17th POTA weekend
later this summer (and others I'm sure!)
I will be bringing my Solar Panels and LiFePo battery set up
to power a station and there will be other forms of power
for our radios there as well.
Anyone is welcome to stop and see what we are up to and
man a radio and make a contact or 3.
Bring a chair if attending as we will be packing light. We will
have a canopy, table for the radios etc.
Our spot is just off the water, just down a hiking trail, all the
way in and off to the right. Go past the brick restroom
several hundred feet. We are off to the left of a frisbee golf
course. I will see if I can put up markers to follow if anyone
arrives after we are set up. We are hoping for Beautiful
weather!
If you need more info, contact any of the 3 of us or
comment here, Group Reply.

Exhibit A - “Bands are up!”
Made 9 contacts on 10m tonight. One of those was Grant, KE8UNQ !
Others were in Georgia, Florida and Mexico. Had an amazing QSO with
Mexico. It was like the guy was next door. Actually it was better than
that, because he came in stronger than Grant.
It was great to see the band so active.
