DELARA Number 1 in Ohio QSO Party!

The roar of the crowd grows more intense! The band has done its script, the cheerleaders are in line with their banner, and we can see the team ready to storm the field!

Oh. Well maybe not. This is a different kind of team.

A big part of ham radio is improving our operating skills. And of course, there’s the “my antenna is better than yours” aspect.

In-Brief-th

A natural result is the ham radio contest! Participants in the ‘radio sport’ have grown in number, technology and skill. Ham radio contesting is an operator endurance event, requiring intense concentration, strategy, and of course the right equipment. All of this is put to the test over a period of from 24 to 48 hours of nonstop, high speed communication. A few large contest stations occupy their own buildings on multi-acre sites with numerous high towers and intricate antennas. These contest stations field a team of two dozen or more skilled operators intent on posting a winning score - that score being in some contests over a million points! Others retreat to their own complex on a Caribbean island and become the target sought by thousands of hams around the world.

And then, there are the ‘normal’ guys.

For the thirty years DELARA has been in place, operating skills and contests have been the interest of a number of members. This group of operators has posted a number of successful entries in various contests - the results are on the wall all around you as you enter our “Trophy Room” here on the site. And now, we launch the logical next step:

          The DELARA Contest Team!

We launch the team as representatives of DELARA, and examples of excellent contest operation. We hope this team will accomplish several things:

  • The Contest Team will be a more organized approach to obtain high scores.
  • The Contest Team will also exist to help hams who are interested in learning or improving their contesting.
  • The Contest Team will be open to all ham operators. It’s hoped that the team will function as an outreach for DELARA. Hopefully team members will become interested in joining DELARA. But membership is not required to be on the team.
  • The team will meet regularly to discuss their strategy, train interested operators, coordinate contest entries, and generally appreciate the art of radio contesting.

        After the Contest

Contests are fun before the contest actually starts, with strategy, preparation and discussion. They’re also fun after the hours have gone by- as we compile our scores, submit them to the contest sponsors, and of course compare our performance among each other. We will soon have a compilation of recent contest scores here on the site for all to see!

        Team Makeup

Because it was his idea, and he couldn’t deflect quickly enough, one of our premier operators Tom Hain, KV8Q, will be summarily annointed as the Team Coach! Tom has years of experience, and has written articles for the DELARA News regularly about contesting. Despite his dedication to the score, Tom also understands that contests take on many flavors for different operators. Some might only want to pick a few new countries or callsigns for their list. Others might want to work one hundred countries in a weekend. Still others might just want to upgrade their cw skills, or thier voice operating skills. The great thing is that ALL these interests play well in the radio sport- and all these interests are valid reasons for you to be a part of the Contest Team!

If YOU are interested in contesting and improving your operating skills, send Tom an email at contest [ at ] k8es.org. We welcome ALL who are interseted, you do not have to be a member of DELARA! If you don’t have a ham license but this sounds fun to you- click on the “get licensed” link and we’ll be happy to help you along!

THE ROSTER:

Here are the members of the DELARA Contest Team. This is NOT exclusive- we would love to add your callsign!
