What would happen if communications across the entire country stopped? No cellphones, no Internet...nothing? Ham Radio, well known as the “When All Else Fails” communications system, practices for that type of event once a year- third full weekend of June. In order to make it fun, the ARRL turns this into a contest- and it has been a successful endeavor not only across the country but for DELARA as well. It’s a big club event!
The concept is to take your ham radio gear, antennas, and supplies somewhere you would not normally be- and set up a station there completely independent of normal communications and power. The goal is to make as many contacts with other similar stations located around the country.
DELARA does quite well- showing our ability to stage a great communications station, operate efficiently and productively during the contest, and at the same time enjoy each other’s company and some great food! It’s a weekend event we look forward to every year.
DELARA has placed first in our state and class in the past, and in 2010 placed first in Ohio in our class (4 operating stations) and 5th in class nationwide.
Now, Field Day 2011 is in the books. Approximately 45 ham operators joined us at the Scioto Township Park to ‘light up the atmosphere’ with the sounds of “4A Ohio from K8ES!”
AND THE SCORE HAS BEEN TALLIED!
DELARA, the Delaware Amateur Radio Association, placed #3 in the nation in class 4A (four transmitters on emergency power.)
There were 125 stations across the country in that class. Our score of 15,172 put us barely behind the Albuquerque DX association, and the national class leader, the Utah DX association with 16,668 points. Our contact total- 4,445 was actually higher than the number two station (4,163) and close to the winning 5,368 from NM. (The total score is comprised of the contact total plus additional bonus points for such things as power, PR, and other items.)
In the Ohio section, there were 134 stations in operation in all classes. K8ES reported the highest score in the entire state.
Part of that was the number of contacts we made- 4,445. The next highest contact total was 3,568 from Portage County. Our strong contact total showed up in the national standings across all categories- we were 13th overall in number of contacts. We were also 13th nationally with all categories combined.
Our score represents the highest score in DELARA’s Field Day history!
