DELARA certified by Laurel for VE testing, 1-4-2011
DELARA’s Volunteer Examiners will be able to provide Ham Radio license tests (FREE) through LAUREL’s exam program. DELARA is being certified as a testing team! Three weekend dates have been set for 2012 already. Watch our calendar for details!

New Officers for 2012, 11/17/2011
Larry Mittman, N9AUG, has agreed to serve as President of DELARA for 2012. Dave LeMay, WB2CWJ, and Ken Bird, W8SMK, have agreed to stay on in their positions.

DELARA Top in Ohio, #3 in category nationwide for FIELD DAY (10/26/2011)
DELARA placed at the top in Ohio for the 2011 ARRL Field Day exercise. With a score of 15,172 DELARA took the top honors in Ohio over all categories. The score also put us in the #3 position in our category (4 transmitter, emergency power) in national rankings behind clubs in New Mexico and Utah. Our score was good enough to land us at #13 overall nationally across all categories. 76 club members participated to complete 4,445 verified contacts with other stations around the country. Field Day is a national test of emergency communication capabilities for Ham Radio operators.

DELARA License Class a Success! (10/17/2011)
DELARA staged a class for prospective hams at the Delaware County EOC this month. Thirteen students made it through the three week class. With walkins, 14 people took 18 exams. There are 8 new technicians (Welcome to ham radio!) 2 new Generals (Congratulations!) and 1 new Extra (Nice going, Chief!)

DELARA News Wins ARRL Division Award (9/11/2011)
The DELARA News was awarded the “Joseph J. Phillips, K8QOE, Newsletter Award” For the ARRL Great Lakes Division, 2011. At the division conference in Findlay, Director Jim Weaver, K8JE, and Scott Yonally, N8SY presented the award. This marks the News as

the best club newsletter in the three-state division of Michigan, Ohio, and Kentucky.
The News was awarded “Best in Ohio” for 2010, setting DELARA up to compete with the two other states this year. Editor Stan Broadway, N8BHL, was quick to credit our team of creative, expert writers who are dedicated to presenting quality material each month.

Field Day 2011 sets new DELARA high score! (7/7/2011)
75 participants worked hard, ate well, and had a great time! It happened during Field Day

2011 at Scioto Twp Park. DELARA ran class 4A, and set a new club record score: 13,232! We’ll have to wait until the ARRL publication in late fall to see how we placed in our class and in our state, but overall it was a great effort and a lot of fun!

DELARA Contest Team makes a big mark in the ARRL 10 Meter Contest! 6/13/2011
Members of the DELARA CONTEST TEAM put down some pretty big scores in the ARRL 10 Meter contest last December! Scored out this month show the entire team in 25th place. K8MP, Joe, captured First Place honors for mixed-mode, high power in the great Lakes Division! W8JK (op: W8ERD) took Second Place in the CW only High Power category for the Great Lakes Division! KV8Q, Tom (Team Coach) captured Third Place CW only Low Power for the Great Lakes Division! Not submitted for geographic reasons, but Team Member WA8UEG, Steve in the Pocono Mts., captured First Place in the Eastern Pennsylvania Division for High Power Mixed Mode (even though he worked cw only.) DELARA raises over $1500 at Dayton 6/13/2011
DELARA members worked to unload a building full of donated old (well, ‘Classic’) radio parts and sell them at the Dayton Hamvention this year- netting over $1500 for the club! Well done!

DELARA number 1 in 2010 Ohio QSO Party! 3/16/2011 The results are in, and the DELARA Contest Team looked pretty good for the 2010 Ohio QSO Party! Contest Team Coach Tom, KV8Q, snared the top CW honors, and DELARA continues its winning streak as the number one club, “smashing last year’s score.” A number of the DELARA team members placed in the top ten. This year’s Ohio QSO Party is set for late August - mark your calendars for the next battle!

Get your ham license! 3/10/2011 DELARA is cosponsoring FCC Amateur Radio exams with the COLVET organization. These exams are completely free of charge. They will be held Saturday, May 28 starting at 10AM at the Tri-Township Fire Department meeting room, 495 Sunbury Rd, Delaware, OH. This is Rt. 36/37 just east of the railroad overpass on the east side of Delaware.

New ARES Repeater 3/9/2011 There’s a new repeater in town! Ken, W8SMK and the Delaware County Amateur Radio Emergency Service have cooperated to launch a new repeater on 145.19 (no tone). This repeater is currently in the testing stages before being moved to its permanent home. The repeater callsign is that of the Delaware County ARES - N8DCA. We depend on all four Delaware repeaters for our emergency activities, and we’re grateful to have them on the air.

DELARA Re-certified as ARRL “Special Service” Club 1/20/2011 At the January DELARA meeting, Secretary/Treasurer Ken Bird, W8SMK, showed off the ARRL certificate attesting that DELARA continues to be a “Special Service” club. The certification involved filing our activities, particularly with the goal of spreading Amateur Radio interest in the community. The designation lasts two years.

K8MP Takes 2009 10-Meter Test in Ohio! 12/12/2010 Joe, K8MP was in the midst of operating this year’s ARRL 10-Meter contest when the postman delivered a timely surprise: a certificate from the ARRL for placing first in Ohio in last year’s 10-Meter contest! Joe was surprised, but not surprised enough to stop operating in this year’s contest...at least for very long. His certificate is now proudly on display in the DELARA Trophy Room, among other accolades accumulated by members of the DELARA Contest Team! Kudo’s to Joe, and we’re expecting as much for this year’s contest!

K8H for 2011 12/4/2010 Gary, K8EHB, reports that we’ve been granted our special event callsign of K8H for the annual Delaware Horse Parade in 2011. We made well over 500 contacts in 2010, and offered ‘instant’ downloadable certificates. Emails are flying now to exchange ideas for this coming year- including live video streaming on the Internet. Craig, W8CR, suggests APRS - “Appaloosa position Reporting System!”

DELARA Creates CONTEST TEAM 12/3/2010 After much discussion DELARA is creating a CONTEST TEAM. This team will have several goals- to achieve high contest scores, to introduce and train hams in the art of contesting and better operating in general, and to represent DELARA. This contest team will be open TO ALL HAMS, regardless of club membership. The Contest team will be headed by Tom, KV8Q, and will begin by holding a net on the third Thursday of the month (the day following DELARA) on the 145.17 repeater. Feel free to join in regardless of your operating preference. To be listed on the Contest Team’s email and activities roster, send an email to contest [ at ] k8es.org.

Officers Elected (or convinced to stay) 11/18/2010 At the November meeting, President Tim Trombley, K8TAT, agreed to stay for another year as President of DELARA. Dave Le May, WB2CWJ (pictured), will take on duties of the Vice President. Ken Bird, W8SMK, will continue as Secretary / Treasurer. Dave will assume his new duties at the first of the year. Our great thanks goes to Joe Papworth, K8MP, for working hard to keep our 2010 meetings interesting with great speakers! Thanks, Joe!

Canned Ham 9/20/2010 N8BHL and K8TBN have completed work on an ARES emergency communications trailer called “Canned Ham.” The RV has been refurbished with space for up to three operating positions. Self-contained, the unit offers a comprehensive communications point for public service, emergency events and of course Field Day. N8BHL has offered the trailer to surrounding ham radio organizations in times of emergency.

Repeater Survey 6/9/2010 Ken, W8SMK, would like our input on whether to put the north site of the 145.17 repeater into tone- that would require us to transmit a PL access tone (just like most other repeaters.) Field Day = Food Day 6/9/2010 Hi everyone. Barb Sherman and I are in charge of the picnic preparations for Field Day this year. Do you have any ideas that you would like to suggest? We were hoping to have a good variety of dishes as well as plenty of food for the occasion and for the overnight operators. We would like to have an idea of what people are planning to bring. Tower Trailer is here! 5/11/2010 The Verizon 100’ crank-up tower on a trailer is ours! Jimmie, WD8DCF, Ken, W8SMK, and Dale, W8KTQ, have inspected the trailer, determined the needs, and actually cranked the thing up to about 50’! Modifications and repairs are fairly minor, and the crew expects it to be ready for Field Day! New pictures are in the Trailer Tower album
