DELARA Radio License Testing

The Amateur Radio hobby is a great one! One of the challenging aspects is that one must pass exams and achieve an FCC license before being able to transmit on a Ham Radio. It’s a challenge but it is also very fulfilling - and a worthy accomplishment.

In early days, a prospective or upgrading Ham would don a suit, visit the FCC exam location, enter as if in a courtroom and sweat it out in silence while the FCC examiners sternly launched the code tapes. If you made it through that, then you had the ‘written’ portion to complete. You would then wait for weeks (the longest weeks ever!) before receiving that coveted license by mail!

Things have changed!

Now, of course, there is no requirement to know Morse Code (although it is growing in popularity on the bands.) And now, you can test among your friends and fellow Hams locally and in many cases, for free!

DELARA is now recognized as a Volunteer Examiner Team through Laurel VEC. This means that DELARA can give ham license exams (at no charge!)

Laurel VEC has been testing Hams since 1984, always at no charge. There are 13 other Laurel certified teams in Ohio. LARC was founded in 1979 as an ARRL club, and has grown into one of the largest recognized VE Coordinating organizations.

DELARA has 9 members who are already Laurel certified, and there are a few others in the immediate area. Three VE’s (minimum) are required for each session. And to retain certification, we are required to provide three tests per year. Tentative dates are already set:

March 10
June 9
September 8

All will be held at the Delaware County Emergency Operations Center, 10 Court St. in downtown Delaware. Inquires and pre-registration can be sent to the DELARA Testing Team at testing [at] k8es.org.

Even though there are other organizations testing in Central Ohio, our certification both expands DELARA’s outreach as a club, and provides local testing capabilities in Delaware. We certainly will promote COLVET and CRES who test in the Columbus area.

More opportunities:
COLVET will sponsor an Amateur Radio Teechnician class June 16 8:30 - 5:30 at the Tech Center, 423 E Town St. Columbus (free parking). There will be an 8 hour class and testing at the completion. There is no charge.  Register at ne1ll [at] ymail.com
